A Unique Reversals Method
UPDATE: Through the wonders of the internet, I’ve been reconnected with the creator of this incredible method: Barbara Chaitman, who can be found HERE.
I was going through some old notes and found this method of reading reversals. I know it was sent to me by a reader, but all I have noted for her name is “Babs.” Since these notes were 2009, I cannot remember who sent this idea to me. If Babs reads this…or if anyone recognizes the method, let me know so I can properly credit this idea. Because it is really interesting. I don’t know why it languished in a pile of notes and ideas for so long.
Associating the numbered cards of the Minor Arcana with specific Major Arcana cards based on numbers is a common practice for many readers, at least for the upright meanings.
The Aces to 10’s upright meanings are often connected to the Majors as follows:
Ace=Card 1 (the Magician)
2’s=Card 2 (the HP)
3’s=Card 3 (the Empress)
4’s=Card 4 (The Emperor)
5’s=Card 5 (the Hierophant)
6’s-Card 6 (The Lovers)
7’s= Card 7 (The Chariot)
8’s=Card 8 (Strength)
9’s=Card 9 (The Hermit)
10’s=Card 10 (The Wheel of Fortune)
The unique part comes in with the reversed cards. The Aces to 10’s reversed are associated as follows:
Aces=Card 11 (Justice)
2’s=Card 12 (the Hanged Man)
3’s=Card 13 (Death)
4’s=Card 14 (Temperance)
5’s=Card 15 (the Devil)
6’s=Card 16 (the Tower)
7’s=Card 17 (the Star)
8’s=Card 18 (the Moon)
9’s=Card 19 (the Sun)
10’s=Card 20 (Judgment)
So, the upright Aces are potential and power. Reversed Aces are a time of judging or assessing how that power was used (or not used). The 2s are associated with choices made by various methods of “knowing,” while the reversed 2s are being limbo and not making a decision. 3s upright are associated with creation and the Empress, while reversed 3s are associated with endings and Death. And so on. Pretty fascinating, isn’t it?
For more on reversals see Mary K. Greer’s excellent book, the Complete Book of Tarot Reversals

I love reversals (Greer’s book is excellent – great recommendation). This method is intriguing and makes sense. Off to study more….thanks for sharing!
Although I have never looked at the cards in this way, it certainly makes sense from a numerological perspective to associate the Minor Arcana cards with the Majors. I’m fascinated by the associations with the reversed cards and the next layer of Majors and can’t wait to apply this thinking in my own readings. Much appreciated!
Hi Barbara!
It’s me Barbara Chaitman, aka Babs or SunChariot on AT. Yes that was me and my method that I invented. Someone at AT just saw your post and told me to take a look.
My meanings differ sligthtly, not much, but that is definitely my method that I invented. Glad to see you found it interesting too. That is the method I use 99% of the time now. It works well for me.
Have a great 2013!
Babs
PS In case you were wondering where the Fool and World went. This is what I do.
Page reversed=The Fool
Knight reversed= The World
Queen reversed=Divine guidance or depending on your belief system that your life is working witn you to create what you want and need on this issue
King reversed=Fate of destiny, or karmic lessons

Oh and I add in the suit as well. EG the 7 of Swords reversed is about hopeful thoughts, or thinking about hope. The 7 of Cups is about hopeful feelings, feeling hopeful. The 7 of Wands is about creating something based on hope and faith….you get the drift. 🙂

Hi Barbara,
Babs can most like be found here: http://www.readingsbysunchariot.com/
I believe she shared this method at the Aeclectic forum a few years ago.
-Jase
Yes Jase, on both points.
Good memory! 🙂 I did share it at Aeclectic Tarot a few years ago when I invented it. And a number of times since, when people ask me about reversals methods.
And yes that is my correct web site as well, feel free to check out my Tarot blog if you haven’t yet. The link to it is there.
If anyone here tries out my method, I would really love to hear how it goes, or if you have any questions about it, feel free to ask. 🙂
All the best to you all, and thank you Barbara for the compliments on it.
Warmly,
Babs
I have to try this idea in my own readings sometimes. I enjoy going above the norms to find new and interesting ways to get the answers.
