When his wife, Lady Godiva, begged him to be merciful, he challenged her: if she would ride naked through the town, he would rescind the taxes. This folktale may really be about the Celtic goddess Epona, and the purpose of her ride may have been to bestow the blessings of beauty and good fortune on the people.
