It is also called Bachelor's Day, or Sadie Hawkins Day, when it was okay for women to propose to men, instead of the other way round. Legend has it that St. Bridget took up the cause of spinsters everywhere with St. Patrick, and he allowed this role reversal to occur once every four years. In 1288, Scotland established this day as the one when a woman could propose marriage to a man; if he refused, he had to pay a fine. And until about 300 years ago, in some places no official business was transacted on February 29th because the day was not part of the regular calendar and so was thought not to have even occurred. Deals made today would not hold up in court. Leap Day is, according to Roman tradition, good for spells for improbable purposes. Try something unlikely today, it just might work. |
