Color of the day: Scarlet Incense of the day: Pine Incense of the day: Pine Today is the last day of Cerealia, honoring Ceres, goddess of grains. On this day, her temple in Rome was first dedicated, bringing a horrible famine to an end. In honor of Ceres, bake a loaf of bread today. The recipe below is easy as it uses no yeast, eliminating rising times. Soda Bread 1 cup all-purpose flour 1 cup wheat flour 2 tablespoons brown sugar 1 teaspoon baking powder 1/2 teaspoon baking soda 3 tablespoons butter 1/2 cup buttermilk 2 eggs, beaten separately 1/2 cup raisins or currants In a large bowl combine the flours, sugar, baking powder, and baking soda. Cut in the butter in bits, and mix the mass with your hands until the mixture is crumbly. In a small bowl combine the buttermilk, one beaten egg, and the raisins. Pour the liquid into the flour mixture and stir until everything is moistened. On a floured surface, knead the dough gently about fifteen times, working in a little more flour as needed. Place the dough on a greased baking sheet, shaping it into a rounded loaf. With a sharp knife, cut a cross into the top of the bread. Brush the surface with the remaining beaten egg. Bake at 375°F for about thirty-five minutes or until golden brown. |
