Violets are edible, and in Scottish folk tradition violets were boiled in whey and given as a cool and refreshing drink to those suffering from fevers. Herbal practitioners used violets to treat many conditions, including "love-idleness." Women in ancient Scotland used a preparation of violets infused in goat's milk as a beauty cream, and violet petals soaked in white wine was a popular festive drink.
