When space is limited or your practice is solitary, a wise Witch will invest in a five pillar candelabra. This special piece is all you need to perform rituals effectively. Place your candelabra in the center of your altar. Put a yellow candle in the east (air), red in the south (fire), blue in the west (water), green in the north (earth), and a white candle in the center representing spirit. These are your quarters or directions. You can call them into your circle by simply lighting each candle in turn and perhaps saying a word or a phrase that corresponds with each element. Improvise, saying whatever comes to mind such as: East: "Wind" or "Birds in flight"; South: "Blaze" or "Dragon's breath"; West: "River" or "Swimming in sapphire pools"; North: "Rock" or "Dunes of sand." You can build on this improvisation by adding instruments. Play the recorder for the east, sing for the south, ring a bell for the west, and beat a drum for the north. If you have four people to circle with, this creative play can turn into an entire ritual improvising with the elements as you go.
