In Scotland, round or oval-shaped amulets of rock crystal were used as protective charms and as healing agents. These rock-crystal objects were often held in the possession of certain families, who kept them safe over many centuries. When someone needed the use of the stone, it was dipped into a silver vessel of sacred water, which the person was then given to drink. One of the last known instances of this type of charm was in the early 1800s, when a clan chief dipped the stone in a bowl of water gathered from a fairy spring.
