Oak Apple Day

Oak apples, while they sound attractive, are actually galls on oak trees caused by the larvae of parasites. You may have seen these balls on trees in your area. This day is called Oak Apple Day (or Royal Oak Day) in Britain due to a celebration established in 1660 in honor of King Charles II taking back the throne of England after he had been exiled. The oak imagery comes from the folklore of oak representing good luck: during the English Civil War, Charles hid in the branches of an oak tree. Use acorns, oak leaves, or an oak apple to create a talisman:

"Mighty oak, protective tree, let good fortune come to me."
