Going Quiet: A Day of Silence

Color of the day:  Brown
Incense of the day:  Marjoram

Embracing silence is a test of will for many of us, but it can be a deeply spiritual experience that links us to our pre-industrial-technical roots.
Plan a day of silence, welcoming silence both inside and out. This means not speaking (unless an emergency absolutely requires it) and not communicating through text message, social media, etc. It also means immersing yourself in silence-turning off television, laptop, MP3 player, phone, etc.
Spend your day in silence, and instead of listening to the din of people and media, listen to yourself. Work with meditation or divination. Read. Take a long walk. Listen actively to wind and rain and birdsong. Be especially aware of what you hear that is new, unexpected, or usually obscured by other noise. Journal regularly throughout the day, reflecting on the richness of the experience.
