Uncommon instruments-from ancient times, or from countries other than our own, or those that we invent-include:

• the didgeridoo-a long wooden trumpet

• the daxophone-a wooden blade attached to a wooden block with contact microphones

• the bubble organ-made from balloons, water, old furniture, and rain gutters

• the aquaggaswack-tuned pot lids welded onto plumbing pipes

Research "uncommon instruments" on the Internet for more examples, and visit www.vegetableorchestra.org for a truly inventive treat.
After all this inspiration, fashion your own uncommon instrument. Children are instinctively creative, so include them in this exercise.

Then say:

"Light the spark,
Greet the muse,
Open the channel,
Ideas flow through."
