Meet Steel with a Penny

An old superstition says that giving a knife (or any kind of "sharp") is bad luck. Why? Well, because a sharp knife is potentially dangerous. But even more because knives are used to sever or separate things, whether those things be ropes or relationships. People have traditionally avoided exchanging or gifting sharps for fear of damaging the human cords between them.

Fortunately, there's a workaround. If you give or exchange a knife, athame, boline, sword, or other sharp with another person, tape a shiny penny to the item. The recipient can then remove the penny and hand it back to you, effectively "paying the price" for the item and undoing the potentially negative effects.

Copper is a strong conductor of magickal energy and is thus often used in creating wands. It's also associated with love and friendship. Carry a penny in your magickal gear and you'll always be ready to deal with steel.
