The end of Mardi Gras is upon us, today being Fat Tuesday. Adorn yourself with the colors of the season: emerald green, golden yellow, and royal purple. Partake in pancakes, fried breads, or pastries. All of these foods stem from the tradition of using up all the lard and grains stored for the winter in preparation for the fasting of Lent. Pre-Christian, this fasting coincided with the winter food stores being almost depleted. These modern times allow us to pick and choose the extent of our hunger level. However, to be true to the sentiment, as you prepare for indulgence, take some time today to rid your pantry of some over-comforting foods. Replace with fresh vegetables and fruits particular to your part of the world. Plan some light meals for Ash Wednesday.
