The besom (broom) is a powerful symbol for the witch who works magic at the center of her home. The besom may be made or acquired through purchase or gift. It's traditional to name it (as one would name a familiar) and consecrate it in a special ceremony. At the close of the ceremony, hold the besom across your heart and make a wish: legend says that it will come true. Keep the blessed besom close for seven days, then place in your sanctum sanctorum. Standing it just inside the door will prevent bad luck or evil spirits from entering.
Use your besom in ritual to cast or close a circle or to banish, cleanse, or purify, literally sweeping in or away unwanted essences. Work deosil - clockwise - to cleanse, and widdershins -counterclockwise-to banish. For spring-cleaning purposes, use a besom to "sweep finish" each room as it is cleaned. |
