We are fast approaching the time of year for Yule celebrations, and what is a celebration without sweets? Friday is for friendship and today is the Feast of Saint Lucy. Add pepparkakor (ginger cookies) and lussekatter (saffron rolls, or "Lucy cats") to your holiday baking. Dress your altar in white, and decorate it with stars of all sizes. Light silver and gold chime candles. Offer up your gratitude to Lucy, and ask her blessing on your work. Dress yourself in white (the better to hide the inevitably spilled flour). Gather your recipes, baking apparatus, and ingredients, and jump in. Be sure to bake any leftover dough or batter and place it in your winter garden for the wee folk. In the evening, while the candles burn down, relax with "cakes and ale" - a bite of the fruits of your labors and a glass of mulled wine. |
