In some locations, August can be so hot that we pine for the cold days of winter. And with climate change bringing hotter temps, August can be a brutal month. But today is one for the dogs! Today we honor Sirius, in the constellation Canis Major. Sirius is the big dog in the night sky and the brightest star. During the hottest time of summer, the Dog Star appears to rise alongside the sun, and we experience the "dog days of summer." Watching the stars on a summer night is a truly magical experience. Today, if you share your home with a dog, give your pup some love. Some dogs love frozen treats, others like to lie in a backyard pool, and some just want to be petted. As an alternative, consider donating to a shelter that provides care to animals who need a loving home. Tonight, gaze upon the Dog Star Sirius. Think about the millions of years it has lit up our night skies, and give thanks for dogs! |
