Playing with Fire: Igniting the Help of Hekate
Readers, please enjoy this guest blog post by Kate Osborne, author of the new Goddess Resolution.
The element of fire can be dangerous if not handled correctly, yet its power to transform, protect, and reawaken us makes it essential for spiritual development and existance. And when we think of these qualities the Goddess Hekate comes to mind. In her original role as “mother,” we can call upon her today, via the living flame, to help make sense what is happening in life, to restore some order and ignite your passion. Calling upon these powers not only channels all Hekate has to offer but also awakens those aspects within ourselves. To do this, you will need a quiet space, where you can be seated at a table undisturbed for 10-15 minutes; a small handheld bell for clearing; three candles: yellow for direction, black for protection, and white for clarity of mind; and finally, an object of meaning to you that you can hold in one hand or carry in a pocket. Prepare the space by taking your bell and ring it in the form of a cross over the table and around your chair. Place it down on the floor out of harm’s way. Create a triangular space using the candles on the table with the gold candle at the top, the black candle to the left, and the white candle to the right. Finally, place your chosen object in the middle of the triangle. Next light all three candles, black then yellow, and then white, and set your intention by saying, “I call upon Hekate to share her energy with me today, for the greater good. Blessed be.”
To invoke the Goddess’ power, focus on the black candle and say, “Hail Hekate, Hail Hekate, Hail Hekate Empylios (Em-pee-lee-os) Guardian of Gates, share with me your energy that I may protect and preserve all that must be kept safe and secure, be it of thought, deed or physical form.” Turn your attention to the yellow candle and say, “Hail Hekate, Hail Hekate, Hail Hekate Lampidios (Lamp-a-dee-os) Bearer of Torches, share with me your energy that I may recognise and comprehend all the lessons and merits of each path before me, be it of thought, deed or physical form.” Turn your attention to the white candle and say, “Hail Hekate, Hail Hekate, Hail Hekate Kleidoukhos (Kl-eye-doe-kos) Keeper of Keys, share with me your energy that I may engage all my senses to act with clarity of vision and intention for the greater good.” Then, finally, focus on the object in the middle and say, “Hail Hekate Soteira (So-tee-era) Savior of Souls, with this object I call upon you for protection, guidance and clarity, blessed be.” Allow a minute or two for quiet contemplation, then blow out the candles. Your special object can either be carried on you as a talisman, or you keep it in a place of meaning to you in the knowledge that through it, you can call on Hekate’s energy whenever you feel the need or just wish to be in that energetic presence. Put the candles and smudging tools away and go about your day.
