It’s so important that we create space to consider what success means to us personally, rather than accept what other people define success as. It’s up to us as sacred, sovereign beings to define and continually redefine this aspect of our life’s purpose so that we are enlivened every day by our own experience of success and satisfaction.
One of the earliest recorded definitions of “good success” is “accomplishment of desired end.”1 Desires live between the wants of the mind and needs of the body, in the realm of the heart. To know and achieve what your heart desires is to empower yourself to be successful. Although this can seem difficult to grasp in an insatiably material and competitive society, it’s imperative if we want to feel genuinely satisfied and fulfilled in our life’s purpose.
We are taught to learn more, do more, earn more, and achieve more than others in order to be successful in our field, company, or family, but this metric of success cannot ever yield a deep sense of satisfaction, as it involves an ever-moving, external goal that can never be attained. In this worldview of success, satisfaction is visible but remains untouched.
When the goals are internal and clearly defined, success can be achieved on a regular basis. And when intentions are heartfelt and authentic to your own purpose, the depth of satisfaction to your everyday life and service becomes more tangible than ever.
To set internal goals, take time every day to listen to the whispers of your heart. The heart speaks in dreams, emotions, visions, and symbols; it’s a subtle language that takes a little effort to understand. Connecting within can be done through heart-focused meditation, impromptu writing, richly meaningful vision boards, noticing the symbols that find you each day, and keeping a dream journal.
Tending daily to a notebook with your heart wisdom, soul-deep desires, and successful outcomes will show you how consistently you are creating success for yourself and being supported by life to do so. You can use your notebook to set fluid goals that are tangible and achievable, which will boost your confidence and help you find greater satisfaction along the path of your purpose. And whenever you need, you can redefine success, re-route your path, and reset your goals to align with your heart and Soul’s most pressing desires.
