Where Is the Creepiest Place You’ve Ever Been?
Readers, please enjoy this guest blog post by Debi Chestnut, author of How to Clear Your Home of Ghosts & Spirits, Is Your House Haunted?, and Stalking Shadows.
The world around us is filled with creepy places and things. Basements; attics; old, abandoned buildings; and a multitude of other things (including objects such as dolls, clowns, and statues) can give a person a serious case of the creeps.
In my book, Stalking Shadows, I talk about all the creepy and interesting places I’ve been ghost hunting. But, the place that bothered me the most was a small cemetery that sits just outside the city limits of a small town in Southeastern Michigan.
Normally, cemeteries aren’t haunted and don’t really bother me; I tend to find them to be peaceful, serene places to go and gather my thoughts. However, this cemetery is different—it’s just plain creepy.
If you are very still and wait long enough, even during the day, you will see shadows of people peeking out from around the massive oak trees to stare at you. Day or night, you always feel as if a thousand eyes were upon you—watching your every move.
I personally seek out creepy places; I find them exciting and interesting. So, what creepy places have you been to lately? What made them so scary? How did you react to that?

The creepiest place I have ever been is in my ignorant mind
My parents had a farm in Bedford, VA that had a barn with an ugly dark energy. When my grandmother died in that house, she stayed and sat in a chair in the breakfast nook for many months. I finally got tired of seeing her there every night and worked up the courage to speak to her. I looked her in the eye, told her she was dead and that it was time for her to leave. She sat stoically staring at me until I lost my temper and demanded that she get out of that chair and go to the light outside over the barn. Shortly thereafter, she floated out of the chair toward the light. As she reached the light, I saw dozens of other spirit like beings rise up out of the earth beneath the barn and go toward the light. For the next half hour, these entities rose from the ground, sailed through the light and off toward the moon that was nearly full that night. I watched this soundless play of light flowing from the earth below the barn through the light to the moon for what seemed an eternity, then the light went out. The next day, I went to the barn to check the light, not only was the bulb burnt out but the wiring had to be replaced connecting it to the circuit breaker. The bran still felt eerie but never again gave me the sense of foreboding that it did before that night.
Went to a Halloween party in a cemetery in Cleveland. I didn’t feel any spirits present, however, most of the guests were seriously creeped out and the party ended early.
I just have to give a shout-out to Lori who commented first. That remark is PRICELESS and I totally concur (haha)!
I was 15, my friend Holly & I use to spend time walking along stone walls in woods. There was a lot of woods where we lived. one of those times we walked really far in & ran into what seemed like an old town but definitely a ghost town. It was really eerie. We were looking in the old run down buildings, but the more we checked it out the louder the sounds got. At one point we both looked at each other, turned & ran. The expression of the o that your face makes when your so scared never left our face until we got to her house. We were quiet for what seemed like an hour, what scared us was the loudest bang or something slamming but there was nothing there. That we could see.
A friend’s home..doorbell would ring then after glasses and platters occasionally jumping from the counter and some sort of apparition attempting to materialize before me my friend told me the tragedy of the family that previously owned the house and how this apparition would take forms of either a misty child then sometimes an adult but it seemed fixated with her youngest son. My friend list the house and it has been through several owners….no one stays…I am certain it’s the ghostly tenant. To this day I still feel something watching me from inside this house after all these decades.
Kudos to Alicia & Lori! Walking past a fenceless cemetary late in Paramarimbo, Surinam, a mad dog, foaming mouth and all, took a bite below my knee and left its mark still visible almost 50 yrs. later. Guiliani was U.S. ambassador. I could write a book but let sleeping dogs lie!
Waverly Hills, Belleaire House, Saint Albans, Brushy Mountain, Moundsville ….. a host of places … paranormal investigation takes you to some out of the way places
the creepiest place i lived in was i thought, the house i grew up in. that didn’t hold a candle to the house i bought in the southshore area of chicago. this house had it all. from hellhounds to full blown manifestations. i had a paranormal investigation service then. i had also put up cameras in my own house. i caught my son in the living room and dining room doing two different things at the same time. mt son also watched me go out into the backyard and coming out of the bathroom at the same time … wow, shapeshifters too!!! i could go on and on but that would take a very long time. these things could happen at ANY given time of day.
thinking back on that house, i once went through there to take a look after i moved. there was a family there with small children by the look of the toys outside. i couldn’t help but feel remorse for what they will go through. it is a huge beautiful house. now i understand why the price was so cheap for a house of its size. no one ever stayed longer than 2 years. i hope the family was able to leave as we did.
The creepiest place I’ve ever been was the Ohio State Reformatory. I did an overnight ghost hunt there and the energy was incredible. We didn’t sleep there – we had to keep moving per the rules of the ghost hunt. We felt energies in the cells, the halls, the recreation room and the Chapel. The creepiest place was in a bathroom in the Warden’s wing where he and his family had lived. There was a dark energy there that felt very heavy. We all experienced seeing a bright white ball of energy flying across the room. I was never so happy to see sunrise after that night.
I found Greenwich Village in NYC to have many many creepy places. When I lived there I always felt creeped out, in my apartment, the street, etc. Across from me was a Catholic church and maybe that saved me…I don’t see dead people or anything, but I think the Village, around Washington Sq., would be a prime place for anyone interested. In addition…Brooklyn. I used to live near the Washington Cemetery and I think there may be a lot of displaced spirits around that and other areas. Glad I don’t live there any more. Glad I don’t see or hear them. Don’t want to! Why would anyone want to! I pray I will never experience a “manifestation.”
I have seen two creepy places in my lifetime. One was Stepp Cemetery in Morgan Monroe State Forest. There used to be a stump there that if you sat on it, that legend says that you will die within a year. I had my boyfriend and another friend both sit on it one Halloween. One died in horrific car accident and the other in a motorcycle accident within a year. Someone from the state forestry has now burned the stump, but the eerie feelings surrounding this cemetery exists even in daylight.
The other creepy place was a house that my parents bought when I was 14. It was a very nice house in an extremely nice neighborhood. We all loved the house when we looked at it, but upon moving in, it just felt unsettling. Over time, I started to see a dark cloaked figure that was darker than night come down the hallway and he would stand at the side of my bed and stare at me. Then he would sit on my bed and stare at me. You could even feel its weight as it sat upon the bed. My sister would see the same figure , but it would hover over her at night and suffocate her. She would be paralyzed as in a night terror. My mom became extremely ill during this time and had numerous surgeries and as well I caught pneumonia and was hospitalized several times for lung problems. Then my sister started to see images of our one dog with a woman’s head on it. Then the dog was hit in front of our house and when the woman who had hit him got out of the car, my sister freaked because it was her head that she had seen on the dog. A daughter from the previous family had been watching us at the house and approached my mother at her work when she realized who she was. She mentioned that her family was also a family of four with two little girls. Her mother had become extremely ill in the house and died of a brain tumor while there. They also had cocker spaniels like us. While living here is when my boyfriend listed above die din his motorcycle accident. I went to see our dental hygienist who was reported to be psychic. While she was cleaning my teeth she came out with a ton of details about my life and my boyfriend’s accident that I never told her. She went to the lobby to talk to my mother about visiting our house. When she arrived on the appointed night, she would not enter the house. She said that it was not a ghost in the house, but a demon. That its portal was in the right lower corner of the house which was the creepy furnace room that no one wanted to go into at all. She said it travelled from place to place via that portal bu that we needed to leave the house as soon as possible and to salt the doorways so it couldn’t follow us. My parents didn’t believe her until my mother was ironing the clothes one day. The ironing board faced the basement wall. Our remaining cocker spaniel was lying next to the board and stood up, cocking his head as if he saw something that he did not understand. My mother turned around and there stood the black cloaked figure with billowing robes as if a wind was blowing when there was none. He stood there for awhile and then turned and went through the bathroom wall. Needless to say , my parents put the house up for sale that day. Later on, I was ion French class and school and I heard the boy who was now living in the house telling his friend about this same black cloaked figure. The psychic said that my mom and I were sick because it was lying off our life energies. She and I both became much healthier after moving out of that house.
