In the first printing of Llewellyn’s Complete Guide to North American Folk Magic, we made an error conflating two Detroit-based Hoodoo events and attributing the organization of one to the wrong person. On page 227 in a list of places to visit, we included the Detroit Hoodoo Festival, stating that it is an event co-organized by Kenya T. Coviak. However, that is not the case. Kenya has never been affiliated with the Detroit Hoodoo Festival. She is involved with the Detroit Conjure and Folk Magic Festival, an entirely different event.
Our editors unfortunately confused the two events during the initial writing and editing processes and the error was not caught until after the initial printing. Kenya, who did write one of the essays in the book, was not involved in creation of this field guide or any other part of the book. She herself did not see the error until after receiving her printed copy.
We have made the correction in the eBook and the text for future printings. We apologize for the error. The correct and updated text is below.
Attend the Detroit Conjure and Folk Magic Festival: This event celebrates the larger folk magic community in the Detroit area, and it advertises itself as a place friendly to those interested in “green magic, witchcraft, hoodoo, conjure, folk religions, and more.” Practitioners share their folk magical traditions, and there are discussions about issues important to practitioners and their clients, as well as the larger Detroit and African American Folk Magic communities, such as community connection and environmental impact.
