Dopplegangers
A couple weeks ago there was a trend on Facebook that prompted users to change their profile photos to their celebrity doppleganger. (Mine was Amy Adams as Julie Powell in Julie and Julia.) Ever since then, I’ve been thinking of dopplegangers. We’ve always heard about “evil twins,” often as a plot device in movies/tv shows/books. I think my favorite was Samantha/Serena on Bewitched. Willow’s doppleganger on Buffy is the most recent one I can think of, but I don’t watch a lot of television these days. There are a few very well-known figures who have met their dopplegangers, and being true to the “bad things are about to befall you” reputation they have, the person died within a short period of time. But not all dopplegangers are bad. Some are just out to confuse others!
Have you ever had an experience with a doppleganger? I’ve been told that I look like someone, and actually met someone who everyone thought we looked alike, but neither she nor I could see it. (And her name was also Amy; but that is a very common name for women my age!) We were even asked by someone walking past if we were related. Nope…
I have a friend that looks nothing like me, aside from the fact that we’re both healthy 20-something women. Even our personalities are quite different. But not only have people mistaken us as sisters when we’re out together, they seem to have trouble telling us apart when we’re out separately. Though not a doppelganger situation, I’m starting to think we must have been sisters in a previous life.
Fascinating story, Pamela. Especially that others mistake you for the other, even when the other isn’t around! Thanks for sharing!
I also feel compelled to share that after I left work on the day I wrote this post, I went to a knitting class, and upon opening the book at a random page, the first thing I read was about dopplegangers, specifically mentioning Samantha/Serena. Coincidence or not?!
It must have been fifty years ago. My doppleganger lived in the same town and she ruined my reputation. While I would be working, she would be just across the country line, very publicly very drunk, and lord knows what she did.
When I had to see a military recruiter to give a recommendation, he took one look at me and said sternly, that the military had a morals clause for recruits!
The last week I lived there I was on my way to look for an apartment in another city. Stopping for gasoline, there she was! And she had on a dress identical to one I had owned five years before. On her it was wrinkled and soiled.
Every few years I have a reason to think of her, and wonder what became of the woman.
I’ve never met mine but I’ve come across people from this city or that who swear they’ve met me before.
