More Ideas for Significators
Last week, I wrote about some very traditional ways to select significators HERE.
Those traditional methods have their place and are used effectively by some readers. They never worked well for me. Here are two ways that I like to select significators, when I use them at all.
Trust Tarot
If I use a spread that has a significator position, I will sometimes simply shuffle the deck as usual and deal out the top card for the significator. I trust the deck to make sure the right card shows up for that reading. This is an easy method that reflects the philosophy that a tarot reading “works” because the right cards will turn up when needed.
Mirror, Mirror
This is a method that I like if I’m working with a querent who isn’t afraid to interact with the cards. Let the querent go through the whole deck and pick a card that represents him- or herself. This can provide interesting insight into how the person see him- or herself in the situation. If the outcome of the reading isn’t to the querent’s liking, discuss the significator card’s role in creator the outcome. Then have the querent select another significator card, one that represents the kind of person or energy who could change the outcome for the better. Then talk about action steps that the querent can take to channel or activate that energy or those traits in his or her life.
Next time: once you’ve selected significators, what use are they in a reading? I’ll share some ideas that I use. Maybe you’ll have a few to share as well.
I randomly choose a card – or rather, I should say – I let the Universe choose a card for the querent. I trust that the right one will appear.
Barbara- I like the Mirror, Mirror approach and will try the next time I read for someone other than myself. Since I am always trying to provide solutions-driven tarot, I like the idea of the querent actively selecting a ‘goal’ significator. Thanks for providing this tool!
I like to have blank cards and have the querent draw themselves. If they feel intimdated about drawing, then I have them write their name. They take that away.
My shamanic group journeyed to their significator and then draw it on a blank card. There were some awesome results.
I always include the Sig in the random pull; that way I’m not taking a potentially needed card out of play. BB.

I let the deck choose a Significator, especially when reading for myself. Often it indicates an aspect that I would not have consciously chosen to focus on, yet it always works and has great meaning in the spread.

I have never asked who I am reading for what they want to know. I feel like if they do I may develope a bias. Is this wrong of me?
