Today tarot reader Hilary Parry of www.tarotbyhilary.com shares her two favorites…a book and a deck!
1) What is your favorite Llewellyn tarot book or deck?
Deck: Legacy of the Divine by Ciro Marchetti
Book: Psychic Tarot by Nancy Antenucci and Melanie Howard
2) What do you love most about it?
Deck: I was absolutely struck by the beauty of Ciro’s work from the first time I laid eyes on it. The imagery was immediately both personal and mysterious to me, and I simply knew I had to have it. Also, there are certain cards in a tarot deck that I must love the imagery on, or I don’t connect with the deck well enough to read with it. These cards are the High Priestess, the Hierophant, Queen of Swords, the Magician, and the World. I also love this deck because the messages it gives can be both incredibly high-minded and intellectual and also practical and grounded (sometimes at the same time!).
Book: I loved Psychic Tarot because it retrained me out of my book-learnin’ tarot readings skills and taught me better to simply read the cards. It also gave me “permission” (not that I needed it) that the messages I was getting from a source other than the cards were also valid.
3) How has it changed/affected/enhanced your tarot practice?
Deck: Legacy of the Divine has quickly become my default deck, and when a client has a choice of which deck I will use when doing their reading, it is favored heavily. It has deepened my readings for people with its symbols… I’m always noticing something new on a card, which means I’m reading a card fresh every time and not regurgitating accepted or traditional meanings.
Book: See above… I will now have little qualm saying to a client, “I don’t know why I’m getting this, but…” and relaying a message I get. Also, there was a great tip within the book acknowledging what is going on in your environment during a reading also carries messages with it… whether it is a certain song playing, a bird suddenly bursting into song, or a whiff of a familiar smell wafting over you.
I adore the Legacy of the Divine; there’s something about the colors that just draw me in. And even though the Knights are unusual, I can’t keep away from this deck. 🙂
