Ask four Pagans the name of the full moon this month, and you’ll get five different answers. There are several traditions for naming moons; to give just one example, the full moon in December could be called the Oak Moon, the Cold Moon, the Snow Moon, the Winter Moon, or the Long Nights Moon. Poke around some more, and you’re sure to find other names and interpretations. I bring this up because people can also call two different full moons the same thing once in a while. Some people go by zodiac sign when determining the full moon’s name – is the sun in Virgo or in Libra? More than 20 years since the survey that informed Voices from the Pagan Census was circulated, researcher Helen Berger, now working with James R. Lewis and Henrik Bogdan, is conducting a new and updated census of Pagans around the world. Besides demographic information, the survey touches on what “type” of Pagan you are and what you believe in – and don’t worry, the answers are mostly write-in, you don’t have to tick yourself into a box when it comes to the tricky stuff. In exciting news for minority faiths, USA Today reports on the first Buddhist chaplain of the US Army. For those of you who keep up with the news, you’ll remember that back in 2007 one military chaplain who tried to change his denomination from Pentecostal to Wicca was not only denied, but removed from the chaplaincy altogether. So the inclusion of a Buddhist chaplain gives us hope that perhaps, one day, there will be military chaplains representing all minority faiths.
