About the Cards in Your Reading

Nine of Shields
In the Past position
Nine of Shields
A card in the left position indicates what has happened to affect your question in the past.

Meaning: You may feel restrained or a victim of your own success. Perhaps you long for the simpler things in life, the beauty and wonder of the natural world. What did you sacrifice to get to this point? What compromises and choices did you make? Have your needs inadvertently injured others? Like the eagle that flies from the hand of the lady, perhaps you also long to fly free. You are self-sufficient and able to rely on your own resourcefulness. You have identified what is really important in your life and are able to act upon it.

The Shadow
In the Present position
The Shadow
A card in the middle position indicates what is affecting your question at this time.

Meaning: This can be a hard card to swallow, and its position this late in the Major Arcana can be perplexing, but the trap of materialism and the allure of gain can overcome even the most devout and committed of spiritual seekers. This card implies that there is illusion rife within this question and that things are governed by the basic needs that so many humans crave: money, sex, power, and gain. But know also that sexual energy and spiritual energy cannot be separated. In fact, there is no separation between physiology and spirituality. The querent may feel trapped, but it is likely that the trap is of their own doing or governed by the illusion of bondage, material gain, and ignorance, all of which can lead to frustration and helplessness. Perhaps the querent has spent too many years saying yes rather than learning the power of no.

Death
In the Future position
Death
A card in the right position indicates your questions future.

Meaning: Sometimes the only thing we fear is fear itself, and change comes with its own smattering of fear. This card is not about transformation per se, but about allowing for inevitable transformation to occur in a manner that is not painful or jarring. For the waxing and waning seasons whose life force is given impetus by the dying of each season in turn, something remains of the previous season, and the same is true for the Death card. Let go, relinquish your grip, and trust that the situation needs to end for a new beginning to arise from the ashes of the old. Death is not a bad thing—it is essential—but rarely, if ever, is this card suggestive of physical death; rather, it's about the end of a situation that is pertinent to the question. A new dawn is ready to rise.
