Understanding Astrological Aspects: A Quick Introduction

Person Creating and Astrology Chart

Aspects are the conversations between planets. They tell us how the different energies in your chart are relating to each other, whether they're working together, creating tension, or learning to balance.

You can think of aspects as the dialogue happening across the sky. These planetary conversations shape your experience of life, your behavior, your relationships, and the way different parts of you show up and respond to the world. They bring the planets to life by showing how their energies interact: where there's harmony, where there's friction, and where there's powerful transformation waiting to happen.

Understanding aspects is one of the most important steps in building astrological fluency. This is where we start to listen to the chart, not just read it.

Let's take a closer look at the major aspects: conjunction, square, trine, opposition, sextile, and quincunx. Each one adds its own tone and rhythm to the overall conversation happening in your chart.

And just a reminder as we go deeper, there's no such thing as a "bad" aspect in astrology. Some are easy and flowing. Others are more challenging, yes, but they push us to grow, to become. As I always say: "Everything in astrology is a cosmic conspiracy to help us be the best."

Conjunction (0°)
Conjunctions are when two or more planets are near enough to each other, often within 0 to 10 degrees of one another, and directly and powerfully converse. This aspect combines the energies of the planets, joining them in one voice, thereby amplifying the characteristics expressed. Whether the nature is tense or easy depends on the planets that form the conjunction. For example, a Venus-Mars conversation can build passion and creativity, while Saturn-Pluto dialogue will create intensity and push for transformation.

Highlights of Conjunctions:
– Synthesis: Conjunctions blend the energies of the planets in your chart so that the energies act united.
– Power: United voices are loud and may overpower the chart.
– Concentration: Conjunctions often denote areas of life to which there is a compelling drive or focus.

Square (90°)
A square is a challenging conversation and occurs when planets are 90 degrees apart. This aspect shows conflict and tension, as the planets concerned seem to be having a hot debate with each other, creating friction. I call it the "911" of the aspects because it pushes us to "do something." Squares push us to take action and make changes by accentuating the internal or external fight. Though challenging, these possible "challenging conversations" provide the ability to learn through forcing solutions.

Highlights of Squares
– Synthesis: Squares bring together planetary energies in a way that feels conflicted or tense, pushing them to grow through contrast.
– Power: The clash of energies can create immense drive and pressure that builds until action is taken.
– Concentration: These aspects reveal areas in the chart where lessons are learned through challenge, persistence, and breakthrough.

Trine (120°)
The trine is a harmonious conversation between planets that happens when they are 120 degrees apart from each other. Thus, it promises an easy and supportive dialogue. The energies of the planets involved merge together fluidly, just like old friends who understand each other from A to Z, opening up opportunities and strengthening talents. Trines can also show areas where one experiences ease in life or areas where things simply fall into place. These positive, easy conversations might be complacent if not actively worked with.

Highlights of Trines
– Synthesis: Trines blend planetary energies in a smooth, effortless way, allowing them to support and enhance one another.
– Power: Because these energies flow naturally, they can create confidence, talent, and inner peace.
– Concentration: Trines point to strengths or gifts that feel second-nature but may be overlooked unless consciously developed.

Opposition (-180°)
An opposition occurs when two planets are directly opposite one another in the chart, 180 degrees apart. It's like they're on opposite sides of a dialogue, both with strong points of view.

This is an expression of polarity—two energies that appear to pull in opposite directions. Oppositions will also commonly manifest as inner or outer tension, most notably between two parts of your life that feel like they're at odds with each other. One side wants this, and the other side wants that.

Oppositions aren't struggle—both are great opportunities for integration and balance. The true gift in this polarity is learning how to embrace both truths, honor both perspectives, and find a middle ground that nurtures your growth.

Sextile (60°)
A sextile is a positive, encouraging conversation when planets are 60 degrees apart. It's the aspect of opportunity and potential, suggesting areas of growth and development when we apply ourselves. Sextiles create something of the nature of two friends conferring constructive suggestions, letting us know that the doors are open to get together and represent creative solutions. In that manner, they open up a channel for good vibes to constantly flow in and, just like that, make us embark on activities to bring out our potential.

Highlights of Sextiles
– Synthesis: Sextiles create cooperative interactions between planets, offering opportunities that come through choice and engagement.
– Power: These aspects are gentle but meaningful—subtle forces that can quietly strengthen you when activated.
– Concentration: Sextiles show where you can grow with ease if you're willing to take small, intentional steps forward.

Quincunx or Inconjunct (150°)
When planets are 150 degrees apart, the aspect is called a quincunx or an inconjunct (these terms are used interchangeably). It is like an awkward or uncomfortable conversation. This aspect signifies adjustment and discomfort. The two planets don't naturally understand each other. Quincunx are like two people trying to have a conversation while using two different languages. They tend to point out areas in our lives that we're going to have to adjust or where unease seems to be hiding, and they can then lead to growth by prodding us to find new ways of integrating parts of ourselves.

Highlights of Quincunx (Inconjuncts)
– Synthesis: Quincunx connect planetary energies that seem unrelated or speak different "languages," requiring adjustment and understanding.
– Power: The lack of common ground can create subtle stress or restlessness that pushes for realignment.
– Concentration: These aspects point to areas where personal growth happens through trial, experimentation, and inner adaptation.

Bringing It All Together
These aspects bring an added depth to how different energies within a chart communicate and influence each other. Conjunctions bring intense focus, squares challenge us to grow, trines offer ease and harmony, oppositions call for balance, sextiles provide opportunities, and quincunxes require adjustments. The more we are aware of these interactions, the more we will come to know about ourselves and the processes of our lives, and the better prepared we will feel to navigate the personal and cosmic journey. Let's remember that each aspect is part of the cosmic conspiracy to help us be the best!
