An Interview with Tess Whitehurst

1. Your new book, Holistic Energy Magic, is your sixth book in five years (not counting your contributions to Llewellyn's almanacs and datebooks as well as your forthcoming Magic of Flowers Oracle). From where do you draw your inspiration?

Everywhere. I am endlessly fascinated with transforming challenges into blessings and living more and more bravely, joyfully, and expansively. Plus, for as long as I can remember I have been obsessed with words, reading them and writing them. So authoring books is really a natural expression of what I would be doing anyway. I also love it because it helps me organize my thoughts, and then—through my books—to connect with others who have a similar perspective and value the same things I do.

2. You have a strong focus on feng shui in most of your books, as well as removing clutter from our lives. Why do you feel these are so important?

I honestly believe that if there is physical clutter anywhere in your life—home, work, vehicle, storage space, or anywhere else—there is no better way you could possibly be spending your time than by clearing it. I also believe that clearing clutter is quite possibly the most powerful action one can take when it comes to getting into a momentum where we are living happily and manifesting any kind of success. I know these are bold statements, and I am not making them lightly! Our inner and outer worlds really are connected and really do affect each other, as anyone who has ever felt the exhilaration of a freshly organized closet or desk can certainly attest. And when we start our clearing, organizing, and harmonizing in the physical realm, the mental/spiritual/emotional part of us can't possibly help but follow suit. On the other hand, if we approach our spiritual work with a bunch of clutter in our space, or a lack of joy in our surroundings, our capacity for experiencing blessings and success of all varieties will be considerably hampered. Particularly when we want to manifest positive life conditions, getting the old stagnant stuff out is an absolutely vital prerequisite to allowing the stuff we truly desire to flow abundantly in. Of course, it's an ongoing process, so the goal is not perfection but rather a commitment to showing up again and again, and clearing what needs to be cleared.

3. Holistic Energy Magic truly does provide a holistic approach to living a magical life—incorporating everything from angels to visualization. Is incorporating so many elements an easy thing to do?

Well, it certainly can be if it feels natural and you build it up over time, but it's not necessary to incorporate anything that doesn't inspire you. I just wanted to paint the picture that magical spirituality is a creative endeavor, and that we are free to work with any tools, practices, visualizations, rituals, invocations, or deities that feel powerful for us. I also wanted to provide a bunch of places to start, so that the reader can jump into a new holistic magic practice, or to enhance an already existing one.

4. Each of your books aims to help readers live more positive, abundant lives. Why is this so important?

Consciousness is contagious, and I think the very best thing any of us could be doing with our unique talents is helping shift human consciousness to one of greater peace, harmony, and connection. Because my readers are always sensitive, intuitive people with considerable energetic healing abilities (they would not be drawn to my work if they weren't), it's particularly important for them to step into a positive life momentum so that they can, in turn, support others to do the same. And everything is energy, so magical people who are both awakened to their own power and at peace with themselves create potent waves of peace even if they never leave the sofa. We are at a really interesting time in human consciousness: energy workers and magical folk are hearing the call to help transform our culture's challenges, and to change the way that we as a species interact with each other, other creatures, and the world.

5. What do you hope your readers take away from Holistic Energy Magic?

A means of connecting with their own magical power, a knowledge that they have the ability to generate positive change within and around them, and a bunch of fun techniques for creating the conditions they desire.
