Even in Portland, Oregon, frequently voted the most dogfriendly city in the U.S., one will occasionally find aggressive dogs and irresponsible owners in the leashfree dog parks-such as the woman I recently encountered who, when asked if her dog was friendly, said, "I don't know. I just got him."
To protect your beloved pet, make an infusion of roses, lavender, mugwort, dragon's blood, and sweet alyssum. Soak a plain black cotton cord in the mix until the infusion cools and the cord is completely infused. Let it dry, then triple-braid it while chanting: "Lady Artemis, I ask of thee, Protect this one who's dear to me. Repel attackers, render them kind In emotions, actions, and all states of mind, That s/he may play and safely run free, And by our will, so mote it be!" Tie the cord around your dog's neck, leaving space for two fingers, as you would a collar. (As an alternative to the braid, you can simply soak the dog's collar in the herbal infusion.) |
