It's appropriate, as Samhain approaches, to honor our beloved dead by building small shrines to their memory. Any small space will do: a section of the mantle, a bookshelf or bookcase top or end, a wall niche, or even a TV tray set up for the purpose. Place a fabric scrap or a scarf over the area, and decorate the space with mementos of each of your honored dead. You can even place a small offering dish, if you would like to leave offerings to the spirits. Finally, place a tealight candle in a holder in the center of the space and anoint it with oil, imagining the spirit of your loved one in the candle. As you light the candle, say these or similar words:
"Spirit of _______ , I welcome you here to commune with me and to receive my love. Blessed be." Take some time and speak to the spirit of your loved one, sharing memories and blessings. Repeat the candle lighting nightly, if you wish, throughout the holiday season. |
