We know we need to keep an attitude of gratitude, but how do we feel grateful when something lousy happens? I don't mean when your team loses or your favorite reality show is canceled. How can we feel grateful when we're laid off? When someone crashes into our car? When our e-mail is hacked? When our computer is hacked? When our computer is attacked by a virus?
When something rotten happens, it's an Educational Experience. How to be grateful? "Well, at least I'm still breathing." "I got decent severance pay and I have transferable skills." "It wasn't my fault." "No one was hurt." "I've got good insurance." "My geeky friend will come and fix my computer tonight." Worse things can happen, true catastrophes for which we'll need powerful magic, plus practical help from physicians or lawyers. But for the Educational Experience? "Thank you, Goddess. This is no fun, but I can learn something here. And I'm still breathing." |
