The birthday of Egyptian God Aten is celebrated today. As the ancient Egyptian Sun god, he shares the heavens with Ra, Horus, and all the other Egyptian gods. He is the Disk of the Sun, with many rays, and honored as a creation god.
He was promoted by Amenhotep IV to the position of singular god of the Egyptians, to the exclusion of worship of all other gods. Amenhotep IV changed his name to Akhenaten to honor him. This was the indroduction of monotheism to the Egyptian people, which was not well received. After the death of Akhenaten, the Egyptian people returned to their ploytheistic practices. Amenhotep's successors were so hostile to his changes that they removed his name and reign from their texts. We are reminded here that we should not allow ourselves to become exclusive in our beliefs and practices, but inclusive of all gods, religions, and spiritualties. |
