In Valencia, today is the first day of Las Fallas, the festival that involves generous amounts of food, drink, and firecrackers, as well as the creation of large float-like sculptures that are later burned. It may be thought of as a fun way to burn up the slow-moving energy of winter and transmute it into fuel for a fresh, opportunity-filled springtime.
So, gather up all your paper clutter: old magazines, mail, notebooks, receipts, and so on. Alone or with others, use some of the paper to create one or more flammable pieces of art: a sculpture, drawing, mask, collage, or anything that speaks to your sense of silliness and fun. Then start a fire in a fireplace or pit and throw in your work of art, along with the rest of the paper. As it burns, play music and dance as you feel the formerly stuck energy transforming into joyful fuel for the beautiful springtime days ahead. |
