Although this ancient Greek festival has largely been absorbed by Christmas, Saturnalia was once the best loved of the festivals of antiquity. Since Saturn rules structures and rules, Saturnalia became a time when the social order was relaxed and great freedom was permitted. Slaves were treated as equals, and drinking, dancing, games, and feasting took place every day for about a week in late December. Gifts were given, in particular wax candles.
As the holiday revelry surrounds you, think of the routines that guide you all year. Which of these rules and structures serve you well? Which ones need relaxing or discarding? Sometimes when we let loose, we learn just how strict we have been with ourselves or others. At this time, ask Saturn, the wise god of seeds and sowing, to bless the shape of your life, to help you reflect on where you're going, and to prompt you to change what needs changing. |
