Today is the Indian festival of Diwali, known as the festival of lights. Although which deities and stories are celebrated varies from region to region and family to family, the common theme is that of illumination of good over evil, and awareness of one's inner light. Celebrants also commonly ask the goddess Lakshmi for her blessings of prosperity and abundance upon their family for the coming year.
To celebrate, clay oil lamps called diyas are lit by the dozens and even hundreds. In honor of your own personal triumphs and inner light, gather several tealight candles and light them on your altar. Then light your favorite meditation incense. As the candles burn, meditate on your triumphs of the past year and express your wishes for the coming year. Chant the following mantra to invoke the blessings of Lakshmi: "Om shree Mahalakshmi namah!" May your inner light illuminate your path! Namaste. |
