When you're feeling stressed or you'd like to connect more deeply with your body, find a place where you won't be disturbed for five minutes. Lie on your back on a rug or carpet. You want a firmer surface (so don't do this in bed) but with enough padding that you feel comfortable. Bend your knees and plant your feet on the ground a comfortable distance from your hips. Take a few moments to focus on your breathing, gradually lengthening each inhale and exhale. Close your eyes and allow your attention to move inward. Keeping your shoulders resting on the ground (don't lift them toward the ceiling), slowly shrug them up toward your ears, exaggerating the movement. Get a sense of which muscles are engaging to generate this movement. Now, very slowly, release your shoulders back to the starting point, bit by bit. Try doing this to the count of ten, feeling the engaged muscles gradually releasing. You can repeat this three times, and with each round, visualize your energy unspooling, loosening, and returning to its natural flow. |
