Color of the day: Black
Incense of the day: Lilac

On this day in 1781, in Bath, England, the astronomer William Herschel discovered the planet Uranus. Uranus means "heaven"; the planet was named after the father of Kronos, also known as Saturn. Uranus was the first planet discovered since ancient times, and the first discovered using a telescope. This discovery required astrologers to rethink their science, and there was considerable confusion about the rulership of this planet. Since there were now eight astrological planets instead of the traditional seven, a perfectly symmetrical system had to be modified. It was finally decided that Uranus rules the sign of Aquarius, the sign of group and global consciousness. Interestingly enough, soon after the discovery of Uranus, the planet that rules flight, the first manned balloon flight took place.
