Early in June, I open the creaky attic doors and pull out summer clothes. With growing kids, it's a time to release and recycle things that no longer fit. For adults, it's a time to reunite with old favorites, and a time to let go of things that don't fit in other ways.
The physical act of seasonal change-over reminds us to do an emotional, spiritual, and psychic change-over, too. It's a time to let go of protective layers and reveal yourself. Do a quick go-through of your summer clothes, asking: Is this perfect? Any item that is in poor repair, doesn't fit, is never worn, is unflattering, or holds bad memories needs to go. Put these in a bag, placing them outside the front door. Later, send them along to a new, more appreciative home by donating them to a local charity or secondhand shop. Bless the clothes that remain, and whenever you wear them, remember what you let go of, and what you choose to reveal: I reveal the true me. |
