This day in history marks the execution by hanging of five prisoners accused of witchcraft during the infamous Salem witch trials. This horrific injustice was the result of a convergence of superstition, community upheaval, prejudice, jealousy, and attention-seeking behavior. Light a candle on your altar for each of these five victims, speaking their names aloud, one by one:
"George Jacobs Sr. Martha Carrier. George Burroughs. John Willard. John Proctor. You are pardoned, and we honor your memory. May we never again experience such tragic loss of life through ignorance and fear." Write their names on a piece of paper, and place it upon your altar. Meditate on the significance of this injustice as it applies to our current problems. How many others have been victims of "witch hunts" or superstition-driven persecution? Remember them on this day, too. |
