This time of year, when the days are shorter and the darkness may be wearing on many, is the perfect time to do a bit of solar magick. Smudging is a cross-cultural practice that is performed for many reasons. Copal is a popular resin used in incenses and smudges in Central and South America, and luckily a few varieties are widely available. The sun is the planetary ruler of copal, making it a great choice for our magickal purposes today. Gather a heatproof bowl or censer filled with sand or gravel, an incense charcoal, and a bit of copal resin. Light the charcoal and verbally invoke the sun in any way that you see fit. Ask that the sun infuse, charge, and bless the resin, then sprinkle a bit onto the charcoal. While wafting the smoke, visualize it as the radiant light of the sun filling your space with warmth, energy, and vitality. |
