The actual Saint Lucy was Italian, but somehow she became part of a Swedish festival. She is represented by a girl in a white gown crowned with candles, bearing coffee and sweet treats or mulled wine, walking through her family's home just before dawn. This is a celebration of light - the real Saint Lucy blinded herself because her beautiful eyes attracted too much attention.
Bake sweet treats today and create a centerpiece for your altar or table by lighting as many candles as you wish in a circle. Cut out paper stars and place them on the table and under the candles. Put your plate of treats and a cup of coffee or wine in the center of the circle and bless them with the following words: Lucy's light, despel the dark, bless this food, with all your heart. As I drink, and as I eat, I honor you - thanks for this feast. |
